Major Announcement & Other Misc

I have a major announcement - a new triathlete (my daughter Kelly!). Please check her out!

At my annual physical a few weeks ago my lab results showed blood in the urine so I went to see a urologist last week. He is sending me in for a CAT Scan of my kidneys and bladder due to my kidney stones (had a small one Saturday, not too bad as far as stones go). He said he hopes the results from the CAT scan will be good enough that they do not have to look in my bladder with a camera. "What!" Did he say camera? There's only one way in I know of! Too invasive for me!

Last Thursday I rode my bike outside for an hour and only made it 7.3 miles, very slow for even me. So Pete has me increasing my biking. My workouts for the weekend: Friday: 45 minutes on the trainer and weights; Saturday: swim 1700 and bike 30 outside; Sunday bike 45 outside with 15 minutes walk off the bike, then a 1 hour walk in the afternoon; today it is swim 1900 and then bike one hour 15 minutes. Tuesday is a recovery day with no exercise and staying off my feet as much as possible. That's good because I am sore! But I do think the increased biking will pay off.

I only have 20 days until my first tri this summer (Second in my short career) and although it is very short, I am getting nervous already. The swim is 300 yards open water, 8.25 mile bike, and a 5k. I know that is small stuff for you studs and studettes, but it is still sizeable for me at this point and this weight. I just want to finish and hopefully the finish line will still be up when I get there. But if not, that's okay to, as long as I finish. Then 3 more weeks of training and a full sprint in Iowa with a 15 mile bike, am I crazy?

Hope your Memorial weekend was good and your training wasn't interupted by too much beer or potatoe salad!

Misc stuff

This week's workouts: swim: 4100 yds, bike: 3:50, walk: 2:10, weight training: 2:00.
Dropped 3 more pounds, overall a very good week.

My coach and I discussed the 1/2 IM and I have decided to drop it for this year as I am way behind on training due to the 4 months off with my foot. My "A" races are going to be the Glenwood Tri again and the SOMA Quarterman. I feel good about this decision.

I booked my flight today for IM Louisville. Two reasons I'm going - one is to get motivated and to see an IM race, and the other is to support and hang out with a very cool tri-blogger! Hopefully I will get to meet up again with Geekgirl, the Clydeologist, and hopefully get to meet none other than IronPol. If any of you are going, let me know!

Went to the Ortho Dr for my foot and here is what he had to say. Since my big toe and calicifed and is so much shoerter than the 2nd and 3rd toes, they take all the pressure of my strides ( I hope to have a copy of the x-ray posted soon as I know you are all just dying to see my messed up foot!) The first option was to have a metatarsal bar put on my shoe so I don't land on those toes. I need to wear it for 6 weeks to see how it does. The other option is to have surgery where they would actually take bone out of toes # 2 and 3 and bring them into alignment with the big toe (joints, etc). I don't want to go there if possible!
Check out the bottom of the shoe:

Tommorrow I have a 45 minute bike, a swim lesson with Pete, then a 1:15 walk, and then a nap! Have a great week!

Change of Plans

I was going to do the Jack's Generic Triathon in Austin Texas in August, but it looks like family obligations will negate that race, which is fine. I can go to Texas next year and our friends should still be living there.

I have added a race June 16, which is just 6 weeks away (okay, time to get serious and I can now start worrying about eveything under the sun!) I will be particpating (not racing yet) in the Topeka Tinman Triathlon which is a sort of mini-sprint: 300 yd swim, 8.25 mile bike, and then a 5k. It will be a good first race for me this year.

Wes is now a Triathlete! Way to go dude! Bigun is doing the 101 today and Mary Sunshine is doing the White Lake 1/2 IM in North Carolina, hope they have a great day!

Eric took a nasty fall on his bike as he gets closer to his 1/2 IM in just a couple of weeks, check this out! He is still going, which is great!

Training this week was good and my ankle is on the mend quite well. I feel like I am getting back a little of my cardio conditioning. Yesterday I swam 1700 yds, then later in the day had a brick workout of 15 minutes walk, 15 minutes bike, 15 minutes walk, finishing with 30 minutes on the bike. My thighs are a little sore today but not as bad as I thought they may be. I rode on the trainer for 30 mins this morning and will do a one hour walk this afternoon.

Have a great week, bloggers!

The Doctor, The Dietician, and My Foot

The Doctor:
Today I had my annual physical. Here are the results:
Blood Pressure - fine
Cholesterol: 145
LDL 82 (under 100 is optimal)
Triglycerides: 118 (under 150 optimal)
Hemo A1C 5.9 (under 6.0 non-diabetic - a bit too close on this one)
Liver - fine
Kidneys - fine
Prostate - Fine (so the Dr tells me to bend over and as he snaps on the latex glove, tells me to "relax" Yeah, right! I always feel like I'm about to buy a used car when I'm in this position!)
Iron - low (I'm mildly anemic!) They took another blood sample today to test further.
Thyroid - fine
Heart- fine

The Dietician:
I have not broken through my plateau so I went for a visit. I hover between 400 and 410 and I'm working out 10-12 times a week! I need to add fat to my breakfast and starches to my evening meal after I work out. Will be interesting to see if this does the trick.

My Foot:
My toes are swollen, as is the ball of my foot. You can see in the photo how swollen my right foot is and the extreme angle of my big toe. I put a shovel through it when I was five years old and it has just calcified over the years. You can see how much shorter it is compared to the other big toe. On May 16th I go to Dr Lindberg, voted one of the top foot and ankle Ortho Surgeons in Denver. I am hoping my particpating in triathlons this summer is not over before it starts. If I need to have any surgery, I hope I can at least put it off until after the Cornman so I can do at least one this summer.

Swimming and biking are going well and walking is getting better but at this point 3 miles seems far, much less a 1/2 Im! Ugh!
