New Attitude, New Coach

Just signed up with a new triathlon coach, Richard Kalasky  (who has been where I am in regards to weight, etc) and the nutritionist who works with him (Carlos). My attitude has improved greatly due to working on issues, amino acid supplements, and great personal support!

Will post  more later, have an awesome week!!!

1st swim

Last week was my 1st swim in many, many months (8-10 I think) : went to bed early and woke up at 2 am and could not go back to sleep, so I got up at 2:30 and went to swim. Was in the pool at 2:50 am. Swam 2,000 yds (5 X 300, 1 X 500), in 1:17, very slow but at least I have some level of fitness left.

Swam again a couple days ago, I am glad to be back in the pool!

Friends and Misc

My dear friend Brandy signed me up for the Winter Running Series, a 5K, 10K, and a half marathon. Training started today. The races are in December, January, and February, I will love the cooler weather! Brandy will be racing too, so it will be a blast. Thanks Brandy!!!!!!!!

Paleo is going good, had one off day but overall really good.  I am back in the gym. I'm down a good 15 pounds.

Now if I can just move into a less stressful job!

One Week In

One week into Paleo, got to say, the first 5 days I really craved bread and sweets! I have also been weaning myself off coffee, tomorrow is the last cup, a very weak one. Hope the headaches don't come. I am hoping that will help with stress/cortisol/adrenals etc.

I am in the midst of "cooking Saturday". Have my breakfast (turkey and small amount of yams)  for two weeks in the freezer, lunches almost done (chicken and broccoli). Tonight I will make my dinners, quiche: egg  whites/broccoli/zucchini/roasted diced tomatoes. Last week I made this and froze portions. It was okay, but I was reheating it in micro wave which made the eggs a bit rubbery, so I switched it to dinner where I can heat it up in the oven, huge difference!

Today a 20 minute ride on the bike and some wall ball squats. I have lost so much fitness, I do hope it will come back relatively fast. Ironman Championship on the PC as I prep and cook. Monday it is back to getting to bed at 8:30 and getting up at 3:30 to hit the gym before work. I am going to push the weights heavier and increase the intensity of the cardio and lessen the duration. I am going to swim at least once a week, because, well, I miss it!

Tomorrow, I am going to set some goals for races for 2013. Yahoo!

Paleo Starts Now!

A big "Mahalo!" to Dianna for blessing me with this book!

I have two others, but this one makes so much sense and the recipes are, well . . .  very practical! "I'm in!" as they say. Just got back from shopping and today will be a day of preparation and moving my butt!

Also, please check her other blog - Island Paleo

I am back on track, have dropped a good ten pounds. I am back to focusing on Jess type workouts, intensity, very little slo-mo for now.

And thanks again for your incredible support!
(and yes Pam, I finally listened :-)   )

Burnout/Depression/Exhaustion

All three of those interfered with my progress, or should I say, my not dealing with issues and events correctly led to these 3 black dogs. Today I realized I need a new strategy, so I dove into a book I have had on the shelves for a while . . . The Mindful Way Through Depression". Very interesting so far, and I believe very apropos.

One point I found true is that when we enter the "Exhaustion Funnel", we typically give up things in life we enjoy but which we declare "optional", we are not nourished as we should be. For me, it is triathlon, exercising, hunting, hiking, reading, playing guitar, and being with others. This usually leaves us with only work and other stressors, that deplete us. And as I have said, my current work situation is not good for me. And of course, this has led to my exhaustion (and depression).

But, isn't it easy to give into this as you are sliding down the funnel. What does not help is the next point the book is helping me explore. Mood and Memory. Most of us have established thinking patterns when different moods and emotions hit us such as sadness, anger, grief, guilt, etc. Of course, for those of us raised dysfunction-ally, we have many incorrect or sabotaging thoughts associated with moods and emotions such as: "I'm worthless"; "I'm not good enough"; "I screwed up again", etc, etc. These are pretty ingrained.

So, now something new happens, we have a "mood" or "emotion", let's say guilt. So I am driving down the street and I get hit by this wave of guilt which was the emotion I have for a decision I made. The emotion is real and so is the guilt, I made a decision and it had some negative consequences for others. That is truth. Now, automatically my established thinking patterns kicked in, "I screwed up", "I am bad", "I'll never be fore-given", etc. Well that was not working out so well! As my good friend Brandy would do, I hit the books.

Now, when the new mood/emotion/issue hits, and the old thinking patterns reactivate, this results in two negative outcomes. One is the depression or sadness, etc, increases. The second is, instead of focusing on helpful ways of dealing, we go back to trying to figure out why we are so messed up, why we are not worthy, why we keep screwing up, etc. We try to sort things out and force a solution, these are the wrong tools for the job! We stay fixated on what made us unhappy, guilty, sad, etc.

The author states "We can't change the fact that past memories and self-critical and judgmental ways of thinking are triggered when we feel unhappy. It all happens quite automatically." The good thing is, there is a new way, we just need to realize our moods reactivate that old thinking an we can indeed choose to learn to relate to our moos in a different manner/approach. The first step is "to see even more clearly the ways in which we entangle ourselves. We need to become more aware of the pattern or mode, of mind that gets switched on and can cause so much suffering."

Now, I am not saying my guilt was not real, but after a few years, it is time to move forward from getting so depressed and move forward in a healthy, mindful way. More to follow!

State of Mind

This is my thought for today, saw this on FB from I See Fit, Comments at bottom are mine as is the red arrow. The week was better on food, I was more organized, workouts were sporadic. Worked too way much. I am actively seeking a new position as my job is affecting my health and spirit in a very negative way. My goals for this weekend: Ride my bike twice and strength train. Hope you have a great weekend!

Grrrrrr!

Well that last year sucked in some ways. met a really great gal in Hong Kong (Hi Arlene!), my daughters are great, but the rest of the year was bad. One year since my DNF at Boulder 70.3, I took some time off from training and quickly spiraled out of control. No one to blame but me. The job I am in is high pressure and stressful, I tried to handle it without my exercise endorphins, not the smartest decision (to say the least!) So you all know what I turned to for stress relief, food and sleeping in. The results? Disastrous! 5 and 1/2 years of consistent working out 8-15 hours a week, down the tube. I have put back on 60 pounds, have only swam three times in the last 6 months. I rarely ride, don't lift, have been back to fast food drive thru for breakfast and dinner too many times a week I'm tired of being tired, tired of the fat, tired of not finishing. I'm back
