Tagged!

Tagged by Michael Lovato no less! So as I sit here recuperating from a day of shopping with my daughter Kelly (which is much tougher than training!), here is the tag: list five facts about yourself. They can be any five things.

Tagged are the first five people to post a comment!

Okay, per Brigitte's request, here is the revised list:

1. I'm actually a very shy person, I just face it and work through it.
2. I love to play practical jokes and I try to keep my co-workers laughing and happy.
3. I'm DFL in my races but I still love it!
4. I've never streaked, but on my "bucket list" is this mooning.
5. In the 80's, I ran a dating club, which was great as I got first pick!(it really helped me with my shyness!).

On a side note, I am doing fine during this personal transition, the girls are doing fairly well so far too. Hope your holidays are not stressful!

A Very Nice Week Indeed!

I know that seems like a lot of training time, but some of it is low intensity and I'm walking still at this point. Pete really is a great coach!

Duane: Nice job this week. I’m this close (my fingers are held together) to sending out a ranting e-mail which asks my other athletes why a 350lb plus guy can get in 12 hours a week of training and I hear absolutely no complaints (other than a saddle in the ass) and they can’t get in 8 hours. WTF? I got in 12 + hours this week and I’m not training for anything (well maybe something).

Nice work . . . Let’s do this thing…..

I've Been Violated!

I went to my first spinning class tonight with my co-worker Brandy, you know the ones, they have those bikes with the really small saddles. I can only imagine it's what prison is like. I hope I can walk tomorrow! LOL

These should be outlawed!

Now this is more like it!

The Bet

Kyle, one of my co-workers and I, made a bet today. The first one to eat any kind of dessert pastry between now and April 17th (when we go to Turkey Hunting Camp) has to buy the winner a 1 and 1/2 hour massage. This includes donuts, twinkies, danish, cookies, cake, pop tarts, etc. If it's a sweet baked good, it is forbidden! He does have a single out for one piece of cake when his mom graduates from nursing school. But I am taking the high road, none! I'm going to enjoy that massage!

Swam today, just 1350, but it was so great to get back in the pool after a full month off! My shoulder is a little stiff, but I am going to be serious on my conditioning and rehab exercises.

I am back on a structured training plan and pretty much have my 2008 season laid out so I am feeling more focused. My daughter Kelly has committed to doing the Iron Horse Super Sprint in North Platte, so watch out Jay, we'll be visiting! Next week I will train 10+ hours, I'm psyched!

Tomorrow is the IM show on NBC, better take my Kleenex as I always get so emotional, especially watching the age groupers and special interest stories. I remember seeing my first one in person this year and seeing GeekGirl bust through darkness into the finishing chute just before the cutoff (incredibly emotional and moving), and getting to hang with S. Baboo, Dying Water Buffalo, Iron Pol, and Mary Sunshine (all who finished!) And of course Waddler! IM is just too cool!

Great news!

My MRI came back, my rotator cuff is intact, no tears, no shredding, the ligaments look good, I just need to strengthen my shoulder, stretch, and do Ibuprofen for a while! I have a touch of arthritis at the acromium of scapula. I am back in the pool on Friday!!!! I am so relieved!

Tomorrow I start back into a structured training plan which I love and actually need. Free styling it on my own is not at the level I need. It''s probably better than most average people who exercise occasionally, but who wants to be average? I have progress to make! Races to run! Bloggers to meet!

My Coach switched from Training Peaks to Workout Log.com. I'm liking the looks of it so far. My co-worker Brandy (who also did her first tri this past summer) also turned me onto this web site which looks really good for logging my food.

And thanks for all your encouragement and support during all this. Have a great week and remember, Exercise those holiday stresses away!

Ironman and Stuff

Just in case you're interested: NBC 2007 Ford Ironman World Championship, December 1st, 4:30pm-6:00pm EST.

I would also like to introduce you to Cheryl!

I was supposed to start back into structured training today with Pete. I have the flu and I was blowing and going most of last night, both ends. Reminded me of driving the porcelain bus during high school and college, man I'm glad I don't go there anymore! (I know, TMI!) My OCPD tells me "work out!" but my brain and stomach tell me "go back to bed!" I'm opting for the latter.

My MRI was rescheduled and I finally got it done, tomorrow I meet with the Dr to get the results. My shoulder still hurts. I have not done any swimming or biking since SOMA, just walking and weight training. I am looking forward to getting back into gear. I hope I will be able to swim! As Pete says, I don't have an off season, I have a post season! Let's get moving!

Pete and I met and laid out my plans for 2008.
May - will add something here, just not sure which one yet, any suggestions?;
June - Trailblazer Triathlon near Spokane, 400 yd swim, 12 mile bike and a 5k. Hope to hang with Kim and Spokane Al;
June - Then I hop on over to Idaho and Volunteer at IM CDA and hang with more cool bloggers;
July - Table Mountain Triathlon with my daughter Kelly. She starts back training next week.
August - Rattlesnake Olympic here in Colorado;
September - TriGlenwood again (it will be a yearly thing).
October - Probably do SOMA again.

Thanks for your encouragement and kind words, hope you all have a great week!

2007/2008

2007 was an incredible year for me.

January - about all I could do was swim, as I was in a walking cast with a sprained ankle and two overuse traumas (read stress fractures) on my right foot. I started the year off right with the GYGO tri on New Years.

February – I was still swimming and got on the stationary bike at the gym for light spinning. Passed a kidney stone, ouch!

March – Met Pete Alfino from Mile High Multisport who is now my coach. Went to his seminar Triathlon 101 and it was great.

April – I started working with Pete on April 1. Started walking again after nearly 4 months of hobbling around. Went for a walk around a nearby lake - 1.4 miles. I was so out of shape with walking and my cardio fitness was so low it took me 1:30:00 and 3 rest stops to make it. But my ankle held up pretty good. I had the pleasure of meeting S. Baboo and Geek Girl in Boulder for lunch. I also started developing toe problems (which I now relate to the orthotics).

May – My walking was getting better and my daughter Kelly started training for her first triathlon.

June – Did my second tri ever, the Topeka Tinman in Kansas. The swim was 300 yards open water, 8.25 mile bike, and a 5k. It was humid! I was sweating like crazy before the race and that came back to bite me in the butt later. It was my first open water swim and I had heard so many stories of people freaking out I wondered how I would do. It was not a problem at all, I felt very comfortable except for the time the guy clobbered me in the back of the head. My calf muscle on my right leg started cramping up during the last 2 miles of the bike and by the time I hit the run portion, I was walking like a pirate with a peg leg. Major pain, major humidity, but I finished. At the finish line were Blink, Jay, and Bev! I learned I am physically tough and I also figured out I would never do a race in a cotton shirt again!

July – The Iowa Cornman was up next. A 500 meter swim, 15 mile bike, and a 5k. I wondered what I had gotten myself into! The course had rolling hills and the Hill of Death, aptly named by Danielle. It was my second open water swim (500 meters) and that went well. By the time the race rolled around I had considered not even doing the run portion as my foot was so messed up. But by the time I got off the bike, it felt okay so I went for it. I was DFL again but I finished! Also got to meet Krissy and Danielle! I learned I was mentally tough.

And . . .drum roll please . . . my daughter Kelly did her first triathlon, the Table Mountain Triathlon! It was a tough one for her but she finished and I am very proud of her. She still has her bib # hanging on her bedroom door!

August – Race number three for the season was the Iron Horse in Nebraska. I got to stay with Tri-dummy (Jay) and his family. I also got to meet Kate and her dad, Lance. This one was fun, a super sprint. And I wasn’t last, I beat one other person!

My friends Jennifer, Steve, Margie, and Noel did their first triathlon!

Later in the month I went to watch and sherpa at IM Louisville. It was a moving experience to say the least! I also got to meet IronPol, Waddler, Dying Water Buffalo, Mary Sunshine and met up again with S. Baboo and Geek Girl.

September – Triglenwood was my very first Tri in Sept 2006. So I just had to go back! Race number 4 for the summer. I took off 24 minutes from the previous year. Stronger and her kids came over which was great and there were a few first time triathletes from Jess’s gym. It was a great time! Met triblogger Elayne also!

Volunteered at my first race – The Harvest Moon ½ and Sprint. Pete kicked butt. Also got to meet Cody, and Michael and Amanda Lovato. Saw Tea again and got to meet TriTurtle too.

October – Race number 5 for the year (one for each decade to celebrate my turning 50). The SOMA Quarterman in Tempe AZ. It was freakin’ hot -97 degrees!. 6/10 mile swim, 28 mile bike, and 6.5 mile run. I had a decent swim (open water), had my best bike ever, then bonked on the run (walk). I didn’t take in enough calories on the bike, maybe half of what I should have. Took shade breaks when I could on the walk but finished and was very happy to do so!

Again, one of the best things about this year was the bloggers who I got to meet in person. SOMA bloggers: Geek Girl, S. Baboo, Andy, Stronger, Momo (and family), Commodore, 21st Century Mom, Michael and Michi, Bold, Nytro and Benny, Rainbow and Hoyt, Pirate, and SW TriGal and Hartley.

November – MRI on shoulder shows no damage.

This fall was tough on a personal basis with the change in my martial status, but my friends, kids, and blogger buddies kept me going.

2008

What’s up for the coming year? A sprint in Spokane Washington in June with Kim, then I head over to volunteer at IM CDA and hang with more bloggers. July will be the Table Mountain Sprint Tri, then the Rattlesnake Olympic in August. Kelly and I will do the IronHorse Super Sprint together in August. September will be Triglenwood again and I may do SOMA again in October. We are looking to maybe add a race in May.

And there will be a major surprise announcement, but I am not allowed to talk about it yet!

I am so grateful for the year I had, my family, and my friends (which includes you!). 2008 is going to be great!

Happy New Year! Lots of luv to you all!

Shoulder

I went through periods this summer when my left shoulder was sore. I'd ice it, take ibuprofen, and do my rotator cuff exercises. It was pretty sore about a week and a half before SOMA, but by the time of the race, it was fine. It was also fine after the race for about a week and a half. I haven't swam since then and only did shoulders lightly in one workout. But my shoulder is jacked up!

I went to the Dr yesterday and she was able to push my arm around easily when I was trying to resist, which has never happened before. I go in this afternoon for an MRI and will have the results Tuesday. It's one thing after another, seems like that anyway. If I have to have surgery, I will still be able to walk and bike all winter.

If she tells me I can't swim anymore I've already decided I will learn how to swim with one arm if I have too! (But I don't think that will be an issue).

Congrats and Good Luck

First of all, TriTurtl and TriFiest are now Ironmen!

Brian and Cody are doing Silverman this next weekend (Cody's 1st IM!) Good luck guys!

I will be absent from blogging for a while, I am studying for my personal trainer certification (I need to buckle down and get it done). However, I will still be reading your blogs! I will post my plans for 2008 after Pete and I set them.

Take care

SOMA Race Report

Just pulled in from spending the night in Santa Fe with Smilin' Cody Hanson and family! What a way to top off an incredible weekend! (Cody and S. Babboo are both doing Silverman in a couple of weeks, I worry about their sanity!)

Saturday was bike check in and that was a nice feature. I never saw so many bikes! 1900 registered for the race, I'm not sure how many participated, 1700+ is my guess.
Saw GeekGirl and S Babboo and finally got to meet the Dread Pirate Rackham! Met Debi (SW Trigal) and Hartley the evening before. All really super nice people!

After the athlete meeting I introduced my self to Bob Babbitt, one of he many triathletes that inspired me in my starting on my IM quest. I shared my story with him and he led me over to his booth where he gave a great gift - a copy of "25 Years of the Ironman Triathlon World Championship" book. And it is signed by him and Michelli Jones! How cool is that! Thanks Bob! I got to talk with Bob again at the finish line after the race. His wife did her first 1/2 that day if I got it right. Really nice guy!

The swag included a water bottle, a nice visor, 3 bars, a ready to drink protein shake, and a energy replacement drink and a few smaller odds and ends.

Headed to the blogger meet up at an Italian restaurant. There were a lot of bloggers and Outlaws. It was fun and I wish I had more time to talk with more of them.

Debi (SW TriGal) and Hartley (above)

GeekGirl and Sweet Babboo

Pirate and 21st Century Mom

Me and S. Babboo

Little Jay, Momo, Big J, Andy, Commodore, Stronger, and Bold. I failed to get a pic of Andy #2 and Michael and Mitchi, bummer.

After dinner, I went back and chilled out at the hotel and planned on sleeping in till 4 am but woke up at 2 am, wide awake. So I laid there and visualized the race and tried to relax. The 4 am wake-up call came and I got up, showered, filled the water bottles and left for the race. Got to transition at 5 am (yes, part of my OCPD is that I am compulsively early!). Set up my transition stuff and then went down to the water and meditated for a while and listened to music. The water was 68-70 degrees and I was worried about it since I didn't have a wetsuit (Pete told me to quit whining). I knew I wouldn't have an issue with hypothermia with my insulation, it was the water on the skin that freaked me out. Finally, the call for the first wave to get in the water came, so I went down the steps and was getting ready to get in when I got a tap on my shoulder and turned around to see Nytro with a huge smile! Then Stronger popped out beside her and they both wished me luck, it was great too see them!

My goal was to beat 40 minutes, I pulled 39:35 which included a leisurely stroll to transition!

The mass start was pretty fun, lots of encouragement in the water before the start. I jumped in and yes, it was cold! Took my breath away momentarily. Then I swam a little, went back to the ledge, and repeated this a few times. By the time we started, the water felt fine and I didn't think about the coldness again. Had a couple people cut in front of me and I'm not sure quite where they were heading, but it wasn't towards the next turn buoy! About 100 meters from the finish I lifted my head to sight the final turn buoy, with my mouth open! Big mistake! I took a wave in the face right when I was sucking in a breath and it took me a good minute to fully recover. I never stopped though, and just kept chugging along. Lesson Learned: Keep my mouth shut when sighting! I was slow but steady. I climbed out of the water and saw some of the Outlaws and grinned and strolled into transition.

T1 - 7:13. Sat down, wiped off the feet, got on my sneakers and chugged 350 calories if HEED, Grabbed my bike and headed for the exit. Paused for a pic for Andy on the way out, then mounted the WildeBeast and headed out!

The bike course was supposed to be 28 miles but I think it was a tad longer. My goal was 2:30:00 but I went 2:49:30 due to some slowness on a couple of hills. But, I didn't stop on them and overall it was the best bike I have had so far. I loved it. There was a slight downhill going by the transition area for the second loop and there were so many people cheering! I felt like a rock star! LOL

It was amazing to see so many triathletes! Huge numbers, and they were so fast! And there were a quite few pelotons! Lesson #2 was learned - NEED BUTT-BUTTER! On my second loop, Bold pulled up on his nice BMC bike and we rode together for a bit, then he went on ahead. Saw Jane, Brian, Mitchi, and Hartley on the bike too.

Drank another 300 cals of Heed on the bike and a a gel and lots of water. Rode into T2 and dismounted and headed in. Took more endurolytes and put a couple of gels in my socks but forgot my Endurolytes!

T2 time was 5:35. No too bad. I walk and don't run yet and with the transitino area as big as it was, not too bad of a time.

As soon as I hit the run (walk) I knew I was undernourished. My legs felt fine, it was really hot (97 degrees), but I had no mojo. I made it to the first aid station and drank 2 gatorades and a lot of water, then found shade tree a few minutes later and took a 5 minute break. Some people run and take a walk break, so I figured it would me smart if I walked then took a shade break. I got up and made it to the second aid station and repeated the process. Same for the third aid station. Brian passed again as did Bob Babbitt and Michael who gave me a shot of really cold water and encouragement. I took another shade break and to get some sand out of my shoe when Debi stopped by for a second and confirmed that yes, it was freaking hot out there! Lot's of people were cramping and yes, it seemed like the Bataan Death March!

Nytro pulled up and walked with me a few minutes (she's such a sweet heart!) and I slapped her on the back for good luck and she was soaked! Sweat splattred everywhere! Hot is really an understatement, read the other blogs and it is a major area of discussion.
I made it to the out and back and had another enjoyable shade break, then started again and found some sprinklers and took a quick dousing! Ahh that felt great.
Then Commodore appeared who was walking with a friend of his and he started walking with me. He really helped me pick up the pace which is good, cuz I was slowing down even more. I knew I would make it, but he probably saved me 30-60 minutes! He is a stand-up guy!

Many people encouraged me out on the course, so much so that I couldn't answer all of them as my throat kept getting dry. As he kept saying - "Feel the love!".
Lesson # 3 - Eat more on the bike! I rode for 2:49 and pushed it hard and only had about 700 calories, not enough for a guy my size!

About 1/2 to 3/4 of a mile from the finish, Stronger, Momo and Frankie, and 21st Century Mom came out to join me and I had the best support group you can have! And yes, I felt the love! Met Benny out there too!

I was so happy to see that finish line and to have this race over! 7 hours, 26 minutes and 17 seconds is a long time on a hot course! I was toast!

Hung around the finish line and got to watch Nytro, Debi, and Bold finish. Got to talk with Bob again and met Rainbow and Hoyt, friends of Nyro and Benny.

Above - Bold, Stronger, Momo, Duane, 21 st Century Mom, Benny, Nytro, Hoyt Commodore and Rainbow.

The race was well set up and I was pretty impressed overall. There were some minor things they may have done beter but not much (in my unlearned opinion).

Thanks so much to Stronger for the photos! It was great to meet a lot of my favorite bloggers and some other people too! I am thrilled I finished.

I have now knocked out 5 states in my 50-state quest and completed 5 races this year, one for each decade of my life. Pete and Jess were great and I look forward to working with them through out the winter. In a week or so, Pete and I will lay out 2008's race plan. I hope to do one in Utah (See you there Nytro and Benny!) and New Mexico (see you there Outlaws!). More photos will come in the next day or so!

You bloggers were a huge part of my success this year! You rock! Thank you and a big hug for all of you!

Classic Rock - 35.15

I finished! I didn't make any of my time goals, but then again it was 94-95 degrees! Hot!!!!!

Didn't have my family here so the bloggers filled in! What a crew! I'm fried, tired, sore toe, but it was great!

Photos to follow in a couple days but the entourage bringing me in was made up of Commodore, Carrie, Momo and Frankie, and 21st Century mom. Got to finally meet some of my fave bloggers and more! What a blast!

Full report and photos to follow on Tuesday/Wednesday.

Thanks for a great season, Pete!

I am going to bed!

Quick Update

Update - just got back from the blogger dinner, loads of fun! It's getting close! I want to get it started!

Went to the athlete meeting and saw S. Baboo, Geekgirl, and met the Dread Pirate Rackham for the first time.

Got to talk with Bob Babbitt! Very nice guy! He also gave me one of those really nice coffee table books "25 Years of the Ironman TWC" autographed by him and Michelli Jones!
Very, very cool! Thanks Bob!

Jane, if you read this, I hope you kick butt tomorrow!

It is hot! I'm off to the room to rest, shower and then head over to the blogger meetup.

In Tempe - OMG! The Water!

Drove to Albuquerque and stayed in a motel (Motel 6 - what a dive!). Then drove on and arrived here in Tempe about 3:30 yesterday afternoon. Staying at the Hyatt, not a dive - HD Flat screen, etc. Verrrry nice since it also has free breakfast!

So, I'm standing in line to check in and there's this really cute blond at the next rep, then I realize it's Debi (Sw TriGal). Very sweet gal. Met her hubby Hartley also, great guy, very likeable people! Picked up the registration goodies and looked around a bit. The race seems to be very well organized. The hotel is running shuttles starting at 6:00 am. Excuse me, you are the official race hotel! Transition opens at 4:30, hello! I'm pretty sure most people here have at least a touch of OCPD and will not be walking into transition at the last moment!

I'm off to check out the bike course. I am pumped but also nervous!

Oh yes, Bigun, the swag is good! Pics to follow on Tuesday!

Lot's of hot looking people (read skinny) and hot equipment around. Not that I feel different LOL, I'll save that for when I wheel my $140 E-bay mountain bike into bike check in, repleat with all it's duct tape and all those skinny people on their $3,000 carbon bikes can drool over my sweet ride! (and if you are skinny, please don' take offense, just feeling a bit envious and embarrassed at the moment).

Just got back from surveying the bike course, and I'm sure all the freaking skinny people here think it's flat, NOT! When you are on a road where there is a rise in elevation to the other end and it's not undulating, that does not mean it is flat. Yes, yes, I know, the plane is "flat" but there is still a rise in altitude! Okay, maybe "tilted" is a better word - "Our course is flat but has many areas of tiltedness within". Yes, that would be a better description! I always get psyched out on the ride survey, but, I just have to finish. I do not need to make a certain time, next year I will worry about that!

I will be in the first swim wave which goes off at 6:30 am. I should be able to be done with the bike before it gets too hot, as it is supposed to be about 90 degrees tomorrow. Then I can take my time on the Bataan Death March - er, I mean the run portion :-)

I'm looking forward to meeting more bloggers today and tonight at the dinner.

OMG - the water is 69 degrees! Argh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tempe is pretty, lots of bike lanes, and dry weather. More later on! Have a great day!

Panic! Fish! Dead Elk! Stress Relief!

Well, here I am two days away from leaving for Temp AZ for my last race of the year. I am nervous to say the least! But, I have put in the training, except for the lack of training the last few days of this taper. I think Pete has me well prepared!

My cold is almost over and as long as I don't relapse, I will be racing on Sunday! I have my packing list made up, but nothing packed, tomorrow night will be very busy. I have 42 items just on my transition bag list! Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder (OCPD), right Jane? Actually I only made it into the moderate category so no worries!

I'm excited of course for the blogger meetups! Bring rushed (and lazy) I won't link these, but I will have the pleasure of meeting the following bloggers and family for the first time: Momo and Big J, Nytro and Benny, Comm, 21st Century Mom, IronShane and wife (Tri-dog Mom?), Pirate, and SW Tri Gal (I think I have left one or to off, brain dead at the moment). I imagine there will be more of the NM Outlaws there too. And I will get to see these very fine people again: S. Baboo, Geek Girl, Bold, and Carrie! Now that makes for a pretty darn good weekend! As Bill and Ted would say - "Party on dude!"

I caught a pretty nice fish on Joe's fly rod at elk camp.

But his son Tyler crushed me with his whopper!

A photo of a dead elk for Jay:

September and October at work - incredibly stressful, major family issue, even more stressful. I need this trip and race to release some stress! If I finish, a massage is in order!

Race report to follow on Tuesday unless I don't go (win lottery or relapse). Wish me luck! I really appreciate all the encouragement and support you all have given me over the last year and 1/2. You are all awesome!

Mucas! Phlegm Yuck!

Every year but last year I have come home from hunting and gotten sick. I started coming down with a cold on Wednesday night and now it has moved down into my chest, which means I may get bronchitis or pneumonia again (which lasts 2-3 weeks). Argh! Last winter was the first one in 5 -6 years I did not get sick with this and I thought I was beyond it. So now I am worried.

I am hoping I bounce back very fast. I will take vitamin C, drink lots of water and rest a lot over the next few days. I had to blow off yesterday's strength training and today's 2-hour walk - that sucks! Double argh!

Elk-3, Hunters -2

Rolled in from elk camp last night, what a great time. Joe and Greg took elk, Becca, Kyle, and I did not. But, we had a great time. Becca took her best friend Amber.

The chow was great, the Rocky Mountains better, and of course the friends were the best part! Did not have one beer (although I did have a few rum and Diet Cokes), ate well, worked my butt off hiking, and I am pooped.

So, am I dedicated or OCD? (or maybe both?). Took the bike and trainer to elk camp and yes, I got my workouts in!

Took some extra guns, just in case!

Stats

The TTW Off-Season Shape-Up Challenge has begun, here are my stats (photos will be posted tomorrow night):

Weight 390 (yes, I went up 4 pounds, argh!)
BF % = 46% (double argh!)
Waist - 66"
Hips - 58"
Biceps - 18 1/2"
Upper thigh - 29"
Thick head - ginormous! ( I mean my brain, get your minds out of the gutter!)

Why thick headed? Cuz I didn't use my brain yesterday! All the cardio this weekend (including a 3-hour brick Saturday, then swam 2.5 miles total on Sunday and Monday, with another 1:45 of cardio this morning, and I erase any potential weight loss with food? I didn't even plan my meals for the day which I know sets me up for bad choices.

I blew it yesterday and ate fast food after my swim. Not a lot, not a binge, but very fatty, bad for you kind of food. Then I ate what my daughter cooked for dinner, which is fine for a skinny kid, but waffles smothered in peanut butter and doused in syrup? Bad choices on my part! I was going for the smooth and creamy and fatty so it wasn't so much stress as it was emotions. I haven't had a day like that in a long time - triple argh!

But today I am back on target, ate well, busted my butt with Jess tonight (excuse me, strength training!).

That Podiumquest Duel Chamber Hydration System from NUUN is mine I tell you, mine! Watch out Shelly! :-)

Misc Musings

Sometimes it's the little victories that are so great! Like being able to cross my legs, tie my shoes easier, and bend over and pick things up off the floor without difficulty! Yahoo! (oh yes, and RUN up the stairs!).

Looked at my training peaks account since I started with Pete on April 1st, I have logged 85,850 yards in the pool (my calculator says that is 48.77 miles, is that right?). I have over 45 hours on the bike and my butt is adjusting quite well. (over the winter I will become "The Hammer"!).

This morning I did a 3-hour brick (30 minutes walking, 2 hours biking, then 30 minutes walking). I love being able to watch my co-workers face's when they ask me what I did over the weekend :-)

My daughters got their first cell phones today (excited would be un understatement) and Becca drove our car for the very first time with her new learners permit! They grow up so fast!

I Dreamed

Last night I dreamed I was running. I was light and airy and ran about 5 miles. It was heaven. I so much want to be there now, but it will come in time.

New Blog and Limited Posting

My posting will be sporadic for the next few weeks as my work schedule is hectic, my training is intense (for me anyway), I'm going to elk camp, and I am going to try to get that new blog set up! So I may only post once or twice before heading to Arizona at the most (I think), but I will still be reading your blogs!

The new blog will be here sometime today I hope, right now there are some technical difficulties : Our Shared Journey

Gearing Up for SOMA!

October 28th will be my longest tri yet, the SOMA Quarterman in Tempe AZ (where I will get to meet more cool bloggers and see some I already know). It will be race #5 for the year, which is my goal. One race for each decade of my life since I turned 50 this year.

The distance is just that, a 1/4 Ironman: .6 mile swim, 28 miles for the bike, and a 6 mile run (walk). I am very excited as I have been looking forward to this one for about a year. Well except the cold water, since I am not in a wet suit yet there will be major shrinkage! Pete of course has laid out a very good warm up for me to acclimate to the water the day of the race.

Pete has laid out my training plan and I am really looking forward to it! He even accounted for my elk hunting trip two weeks before the race (bike and trainer are going with me to elk camp).

My weight today was 386, down 3 pounds from last week! I'll take that!
Here is my workout schedule for the next two weeks, I am looking forward to training and dropping some more weight. My goal is to be down to at least 371 by the time I leave for Tempe which would put me at the 100 pound lost mark! I WILL EAT FOR FUEL, NOT FUN OR MEDICATION!

Monday 9/24 Swim 2300 Done (300 warm up, 1500 straight through alternating 50 T-pace with 50 easy, 500 cool down. It was a great workout!)
Tuesday 9/25 Bike 1:10:00 (cadence work), 1 hour weights
Wednesday 9/26 Swim 1600
Thursday 9/27 Bike 1:00:00 hills, 1 hour weights
Friday 9/28 - Swim 1600
Saturday 9/29 -- Brick: bike 1:30:00 then walk 15 minutes
Sunday 9/30 - Walk 1:30:00 rolling hills
Monday 10/1 - Swim 1550, walk 1:00:00
Tuesday 10/2 - Bike 1:00:00 trainer high resistance, weight train 1 hour
Wednesday 10/3 - Bike: 1:35:00 intervals
Thursday 10/4 - Weights 1 hour, walk 1:00:00
Friday 10/5 - Swim 1900
Saturday 10/6 - Brick: walk 00:30:00/bike 2:00:00/walk 00:30:00
Sunday 10/7 Walk 1:45:00, swim 1700

I sit on my butt all day in front of a computer, so I will get plenty of rest. I am also going to get to bed early and get some extra sleep!

Take care,
Duane

Saturday - Good and Bad, Mostly Good.

Went for my bike ride and rode 25 miles. The first time I have ever gone that far. Did 20 miles once but usually nothing over 15! I'm not too sore (yet), tomorrow morning should be interesting as I have a 1:30:00 walk scheduled.

During my bike ride I rode up to the newly dedicated Columbine memorial (my oldest daughter Becca goes to school there). It was a very sobering experience, very moving. It took awhile to get back into a biking mode.

My shoulder was so sore after my last two workouts that I went to see Dr Marci, a PT who is also coached by Pete. She examined me and then performed dry needling on my shoulder - ouch! Then she had me do some moves and evaluated which muscles are engaging and told me I am not using my lats and triceps in my stroke, but that my traps, shoulders, and rhomboids are doing all the work (my lats and tri do not get sore after swimming but those other muscles sure do!). So, I now know what I need to do, I just have to learn to do it. As strong as my back and triceps are, I should get stronger pulls and gain some good speed! And yes Wendy, I will be good about doing my shoulder stabilizer exercises!

Yesterday I went for a Life Coaching session with Traci Brown. We dug into some very deep isissues and patterns revolving around my eating disorder (ED). It will be interesting to see what comes of it.

Worked today, am working tomorrow (Sunday) and straight through next Saturday. By then I will be feeling like Forest Gump - "I'm tired, I think I'll go home now".

Todays thought for the day - When looking at food and deciding whether or not to eat it, I will ask myself - "Is that food good enough and healthy enough to put in my triathlete body?"

Thought for the Day

Today's thought - What can I use (other than food) to make me feel good now?

This weekend: 12 mile bike tomorrow and 1:30 walk on Sunday, then 2300 swim on Monday which will include a 1500 straight swim, I am looking forward to that one!
My shoulder is sore from the last two swim sessions, going to try a dry needles treatment and start back on my rotator cuff strengthening exercises and be consistent with them!

Today's highlighted blggers are: Pete ( my coach) who is new to blogging, and Meggan Ann, one of my faves!

More to come on the new blog soon, promise!

Have a great weekend!

Faster

I did a 500 yd TT swim yesterday, my time was 13:50. My 500 yd TT in July was 16:20!

Today I will be abstinent.

Today's thought for the day: " To establish true self-esteem we must concentrate on our successes and forget about the failures and the negatives in our lives."
--- Denis Waitley

Today I am focusing forward on what I will become, not backwards on any failures which stops my forward progress, and does me no good. - - me

Have a great day! Luv ya!

Accountability

My weight - 389, back where it was a year ago after having gone up to about 414 over the winter. By this time next week I will bust that number! I had a really great week except for Saturday when I went off the wagon, I was unprepared with my eating plan and it was a very sad day so I went for the creamy stuff. When I'm stressed, I tend to go for the salty/crunchy stuff, but the emotional days are creamy. Hmm! Identifying what type of food I want to medicate with may just help me identify and deal with whatever is causing me distress!

But just for today, I am back on. I have almost decided on a name for the new blog - "A Shared Journey" or "Our Shared Journey" (Thanks Jenny!) If you are going to be part of our support team, please vote on which one! Thanks!

Today's thought for the day: Gratitude is an essential component of a life that's filled with joy and meaning and richness. Whenever I choose gratitude, it always makes life better. (Ralph Marston)

Harvest Moon

Today I volunteered at the Harvest Moon/Crescent Moon Triathlon. That was fun and I just had to do my share, small though it was. But . . .

. . . you know me! I'm either getting really emotional about something or I'm meeting very cool people! Saw Iron Eric and Roman, then one tri-blogger I have been waiting a long time to meet -Cody the Clydesdale from New Mexico!

So without further ado, here is Cody, Coach Pete (he coaches both of us) and moi:

I also had the great pleasure of meeting TriTurtle and her husband Greg, incredibly nice people! She finished her first 1/2 IM under very tough conditions! Way to go! Here she is with husband Greg and her father.

I got to seeTea again! She also finished her first 1/2 IM and got to finish the race with her great husband Mike and her two sons:

Here are Tea and Laurie together, they both got hammered out on the course by one hellacious rain storm with a lot of lightening bolts! It was pretty hairy!:

Pete won the masters division:

And finally, Pete tracked down two famous Tri stars (the Lovatos) who spent about 15 minutes with Cody and I. They were very nice and it was so cool to talk with them! Amanda won the womens's race! Michael is prepping for Kona, I hope he takes it! He even gave Cody a shout out on his blog! Now how cool is that!

A very nice day!

I'm thinking about a new second blog

Since I really need to focus on my eating/food issues, and since so many of us have this issue, I am thinking about starting a second blog. It will be designed for use by those of us that need it, to support each other in our daily battle in this area. There would be daily meditations, tips, reviews on books that deal with our issues, and maybe a forum where we can talk.

It will have a public area where we can discuss things and I'm thinking maybe a private area for members only where we can share and discuss our battles and successes in anonymity discretion and privacy.

All religions and viewpoints, no flaming, only positive support and encouragement allowed.

Ideas and suggestions welcomed! If any of you would be interested, please e-mail me and let me know (dkn747@yahoo,com).

Race Update

First off, congrats to all the IM WI finishers and particpants!

The race #s are in for the Tri-Glenwood:

Here are the numbers:

So a faster swim, no penalty, only 5:43 shaved off the bike but the brutal headwind made a huge difference. If I had that wind last year I don't know if I would have finished the bike. Faster transitions and 4:11 shaved off the walk, for a total time of 24:04 shaved off. I am very happy with that!

A couple more photos courtesy of Stronger (Thank you!)

Tri-Glenwood Race Report

First off, I really must thank Coach Pete and my Personal Trainer Jess for having me so ready for this race! Luv you guys!

I don't have my numbers yet, but I had a great day! This is triathlon #5 completed! Who would have thought? Before I get to the report, I have to share that I got to see Stronger again who came to support me, and her two beautiful kids! They are so cute! And she is so sweet!

I also got to meet Nancy Stevens, a blind triathlete who I think just won her third or fourth World Championship! Very inspirational! She is inspiring other blind people to get into triahtlon and has started a Tri It Camp for blind women athletes and sighted guides!

Nancy Reinisch (sorry if I spelled it wrong) was her guide to today and is a cancer survivor. She is such a great lady and inspired me last year as she finished TriGlenwood while she was undergoing treatment for her cancer! Luv ya Nancy!

Last but not least, I had the pleasure of meeting Elayne! Check out her blog, especially if you are a dog lover!

We headed out from Denver Friday afternoon and got to Glenwood Springs. I just love the western slope of Colorado! Here are a few pics for your enjoyment:

Check out this ride that was at our motel:

Steve, Margie, and Noel came up from Colorado Springs, thanks guys!

We went up the mountain in a tram and the kids and Steve/Margie/Diane all road this mountain coaster and Margie even rode the bull:

Here's the pool just before sunrise, it's 150 yards long! 7 lengths for the swim (825 meters):

Getting ready:

Swimming (I think I got done in time and didn't take a penalty but I'm not sure yet (I think I did 24 something for 825 meters and didn't stop once, turn over on my back or switch strokes, just kept on chugging! I am extremely happy with my swim today!

Here is myself (front right) and my friend Shauna, a first time triathlete heading out on the bike. Yay Shuana! I stopped my watch accidentally and knocked the sensor to my Cateye off so I don't know my time. I do know that the last half was brutel due to the head wind coming down the canyon, I'm thinking my time was the same as last year but with the wind I consider it a great victory and a stonger bike! I would have given anything for drops or aerobars as I was a huge sail sitting upright!

Coming back in on the bike (Shauna smoked me!)

Heading out on the run (walk), I'm still smiling! I think I shaved some time off the walk but I still need to wait for the results to get posted. My feet felt fine and I actually had one orthotic from the PT and one from the Sports guy in my shoes and the combo seemed to really do the trick! It was a beautiful Colorado day, just a hint of crisp fall air. The run course goes along the river and I was just in awe of the beauty and the fact I am able to still be aliove and do these things! I was very grateful!

Here's Shauna coming into the finish and right after we high' fived on my way out:

Nicole and Jamie also did their first triathlon today and I hope to have more pics up in the next day or so as soon as Corrie gets them sent (Good job Corrie!).
Jess and Eric smoked the course again and it was a pleasure to hang with all these nice people and their friends and family.

No finish line photo yet but here is Cindy who puts on one heck of a race! She is sweet and does an incredible job (as does Nancy, Paul, and all the others!)

I'm bummed cuz I can't get the live video feed from IronmanLive! Argh! I'll just keep on tracking!
