Interesting - I Am Intriqued

"Fat, sugar, and salt-especially when combined, interact with the opioid circuits in the brain, which causes us to consume more of the substance that triggered the reaction. Think about potato chips. You don't think of them as having sugar, but the simple sugars in the potato covered with fat and topped with salt are a deadly chemical combination that triggers an insatiable desire to consume all of the potato chips. The same thing happens with tortilla chips or bread. You can't even tell when you are satiated, because the combination of the fat, sugar, and salt overrides the ability for the body to create satiety signals to get you to stop eating." (from The End of Overeating, D. Kessler)
Now I can certainly relate to the bread thing. There have been many times I have devoured piece after piece and was still starving.
Do foods layered with salt, fat and sugar really trigger the pleasure centers of our brains, releasing opioids that cause us to lose control and overeat? (paraphrase).
I just went Paleo on Monday, so it will be interesting to be away from those foods and see what happens!

Thanks.
Something to think about. I am in the post IM funk and ate some Cheetos yesterday.... way to many and now I know why.
Food manufacturers have done tons of research on what makes people eat more. They have literally spent millions figuring out what combination of fat, salt, sugar will get people to eat (and thus buy) more. When you eat natural, non-processed foods your body can break them down into easily usable components and send hunger/not-hunger messages more reliably. Listen to your body's deep wisdom. I'm not sure what you mean by "paleo" but GOOD LUCK with it!
Chips and salsa are my undoing!
Good luck with that. For myself, I really noticed that during my IM build phase I was eating crap that I had worked very hard to get out of my life. Now, in major taper, I've found my appetite and cravings back to normal but, experience also tells me that if I'm away from training too long those cravings come back. Hmm, not sure why I just said all that. Well, back to, good luck with paleo, it intrigues me but not enough yet to try it out.
Don't buy it and then it won't be in the house...
Mind over eating! It can be done!
I am eating a lot more red meat during this IM training-I think it has really helped my recovery and reduction of injury.
sounds reasonable....must throw out/lock up the rice crackers!
I try to subscribe to the idea that everything is alright, in moderation. Lately I'm a bit on the high side of moderation, but I'll get back. Good luck with your new approach, hope it works well for you.
Good luck with the paleo!
Are you doing 'pure' paleo or 'The Paleo Diet for Athletes'? I have the paleo diet book and have read through it, but have yet to commit to it. I've been looking to buy the 'athletes' version for comparison.
