Ironman Arizona and Next Year

I am going down to Tempe to watch friends race and for that I am happy, but it will be bitter sweet since I am not racing. It will be good to hang with friends and meet new ones for the first time, but I think I will be very conflicted. I have gone up and down in depression since dropping out. The first six weeks were hell, then I got better, now I am in a deep funk. I hope this reactivates me.

I am volunteering (body marking) but I am not signing up for next year. My plan is to focus on weight loss and shooting for a 1/2 IM distance June 5th - VikingMan. At that point, if my weight is where I need it to be and if my training has helped me get through my first 1/2 IM, I will sign up for a community slot for AZ (if there are any left). If not, maybe RedMan in September.

Coaching? I am looking for a new coach. Any referrals would be appreciated!

Duane,
Sorry to hear about that coaching relationship. It has to be frustrating, but I am sure you will work through it. Going to Tempe might get you more fired up, regardless of the coach-issue. Hang in there and keep at it!

I'm sure you've had some frustrating times with all you've been through in the past year. Sounds like you've got a good solid plan for 2010, though. Wishing you all the best for your upcoming races, training, body-marking, etc. Enjoy, and remember there are many people in cyber-world (and real life) that are cheering you on for all your hard work.

Good luck in your new goals. I suggest that you consider Ben Greenfield ( http://www.bengreenfieldfitness.com/ ) for a coach. He is an expert nutritionalist, an experienced triathlete coach and an all around nice guy.

I tried the email you left for me and it didn't work... Here's mine: sarahdbryant@gmail.com Looking forward to meeting you! My Mom (Paula) and her friend Debbie are also doing bodymarking. So if you see a gal in her 50s who looks really really anxious and is maybe crying randomly, that's her. :-) I also hope to see you cheering somewhere on the course. I'm going to need some good mental juju that day!

I hope you feel better about the IMAZ decision I know it had to be difficult.

Misty and I are slated to run Redman in 2010 just so you know. It really is a great first IM distance race.

I have used Mike Ricci D3 Multisport for about the last 3 years. Mike is a great coach and an even better person every race I go to people ask if I am one of Mike's athletes. Drop him an email. http://www.d3multisport.com/

I like your plan - good move.

I have had great luck with Coach Tammy. I think what you really need is a crack nutritionist. Waddler 26.2 had a great one and she's here at B2B so I will ask her.

Let me know if you want details on Tammy.

I worked body marking at IMFL this year prior to racing it. Have fun with it.
You know, once you get to your desired weight, it is all about the bike. Quite frankly you need no coach for that. Just find a training partner and go out and hammer the bike. No speed work, no tricks, just hammer. That's what I did this year for IMFL and I passed 300 people. This has never happened before. 300+ usually pass me. When you are in top biking shape, the run/walk is easy (relatively speaking). Most coaching is not geared to what we need as older bigger people.
My two cents, now go out and ride!

How great that you can acknowledge your ambivalent feelings. You have to be able to grieve your original plan in order to open up and make room for your new one. It sounds like you're letting yourself do that. Good luck this weekend getting reconnected/motivated and and in finding the exact right coach. (Oh - and VikingMan looks cool!)

Find the fire inside first, Duane! Then the coaching decision will be an easy one ;-)
